France to reintroduce controls at its Schengen borders

Starting November 1st, 2024, France will bring back checks at its borders with six countries: Luxembourg, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, and Italy. This will continue until 30th April 2025.

What does this mean for travellers?

  • Affected Borders: The new checks will be at France’s borders with the six countries listed above. If you're travelling by car or bus, you might face longer wait times due to these checks. People crossing into France by plane or sea from other Schengen countries are less likely to experience delays.
  • Extra Time: If you're driving across the border, plan for potential traffic jams and delays, as French police might check vehicles, similar to what’s happening in Germany.
  • No Extra Documents Needed: The rules for crossing Schengen borders haven’t changed. You still need to carry your ID card (if you're an EU citizen) or your passport (if you're from outside the EU). If you live in France and aren't an EU citizen, have both your passport and residence permit ready.<

These checks are being introduced because of concerns about terrorism and irregular migration. However, they won't affect the upcoming EU biometric system, EES, which only applies to non-Schengen borders.
